If you’ve ever looked at old travel postcards from the South in the 1940s I guarantee you’ve seen this style spread flapping on a “spreadline” – aka a clothesline packed with chenille bedspreads that advertised the fluffy wares to curious passersby and out-of-towners.
What a piece of our great American history this spread is, offering a glimpse into a bygone era. If you love peacock chenille, I think you’ll be quite pleased with this spread. It’s in a rarer shade for this design, in what I would call a medium lilac groundcloth, and it has the traditional, 40s style cathedral prisms joined by contrasting florals on the drop sides.
One of the reasons I’m not really fond of vintage chenille peacock spreads is so often they were loved to death and quite worn. They may look ok at a distance but up close were very often weakened or already damaged. This one is still super plush with a lovely strong all cotton groundcloth and the vivid colors you want in a spread like this.
The only real damages to note are some small pinholes and an old age spot likely having occurred from years of storage. See final collage image for details. As always, if you need any extra photos, just ask.
❃vintage items are never perfect – but they display their imperfections perfectly!
